Veterans Day, observed annually on November 11 is often seen by many Americans as just another day off. However, the holiday holds a greater significance. It is a moment to reflect on and appreciate the courage, resilience and sacrifices of those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Understanding why Veterans Day matters is essential to honoring the dedication of veterans who have defended our nation’s freedom.

Veterans Day Emerged after President Woodrow Wilson declared that November 11 would be celebrated as Armistice Day to commemorate World War I veterans. In 1954, in response to those who served in World War ll and the Korean War, Congress renamed “Armistice Day” as “Veterans Day” to include all the American veterans. Veterans Day was later moved to Mondays so federal employees could enjoy three-day weekends, but the holiday’s purpose remains the same: to recognize those who have sacrificed for the U.S.
For me, Veterans Day has a personal meaning. Both of my grandfathers served in the military, one in the Army and the other in the Air Force. Through recent conversations, I learned more about the impact of their service. My maternal grandfather was drafted into the Army in 1961 at age 22. He spoke about the initial shock of receiving his draft notice, then finding a sense of purpose in his role. My paternal grandfather, who served in the Air Force during the civil rights movement, faced moral conflicts when his duties went against his values. His role was to help maintain space and aircraft that carried Marine and Army personnel that would suppress racial protests– a duty that went against his personal beliefs. Their stories reflect the sacrifices and challenges many veterans endure while serving their country.

Veterans Day Matters. It is more than just a day off from school or work; it is a reminder of the dedication of veterans to defend the freedom of our nation. Let us take time on Veteran’s Day to recognize and remember the contributions of those who served our country.
