As we all know, the 2024 Presidential Election is just days away. And while we may be growing tired of the campaign ads, the opportunity to vote is a privilege that many people in other countries do not have. Voting is a crucial component of our democracy, as it allows citizens to have a say in what goes on in this country. The right to vote allows citizens to exercise their rights and express their values, which is why it is important to vote in this upcoming election. 

Although voting is a hard-won privilege, many remain disinterested in it. Voting is the best way to get people in office who will work to address issues that matter the most to us. When we vote, we are letting them know that our communities are important to us and that we take our rights seriously. Additionally, by casting a vote, you have a chance to select a leader whose values align with yours. These  leaders rely on our voices to help shape their policy decisions. We have the power to shape the laws that will directly affect our communities.

Furthermore, it is especially important for young people to vote. Since 1971, thanks to Constitutional Amendment 26, most American citizens are able to vote once they are 18. An estimated 50% of young people, ages 18-29 voted in the 2020 presidential election. This is a 39% increase from the election prior. While I will have to wait my turn to cast my vote in the next election, my brother who is a junior in college will be voting in this year’s presidential election. And in the meantime, I will be serving as an election poll worker this voting season. I also served as a poll worker in the summer of 2022. 

Even though I am not old enough to vote, I see how important it is to be aware of what is going on in our country. Contributing to elections at a young age is a way for me to grow as a future voter. Young voters are vital for shaping our nation’s future. Young voters are necessary for a more inclusive democracy that includes the diverse and fresh perspectives of young people. We must ensure that all of our voices are heard, especially those of young people, “the ones who will inherit our nation”. 

Voting is not just a right, but a privilege. It allows us to play an active role in shaping the future of our communities and nation. Let’s embrace this privilege to strengthen our democracy. Whether you are young or old, your vote matters!
